Chino Valley Artist, David Neely, will be the guest artist for a month at Arts Prescott Cooperative Gallery showing his Fine Art Photography starting May 26th. His show will run through June 22, 2011.
David’s interest in Photography began during his first year in College. He had a number of friends who were returning from military service and came back with nice 35mm film cameras purchased in the military stores on base. The college David was attending did not have any photography classes but they did have a school newspaper and yearbook and a darkroom so he spent many hours watching others process film and taking pictures on campus, so he quickly knew this was something I wanted to experience.
After college, knowing very little but with the impatience of youth, David Neely opened his own Photo business in his home town of Bethesda, Md. At first he did anything that came his way, mostly portraits and weddings. David quickly became bored with that and thanks to the help of a local Advertising Agency he quickly moved into the Commercial market. Neely’s career moved ahead quickly and he was soon anxious to move to a larger market from the limited market available in the Md and the Washington, DC area. Moving along with his wife Sheila and baby son Adam to Dallas, Texas was the big step David had been looking for. They setup a studio in downtown Dallas specializing in Commercial, Advertising and Fashion Photography. During those years David worked for most of the largest clients in the Southwest region such as Neiman Markus, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Dr Pepper, JC Penny, Sears and many local Advertising Agencies. The studio grew and I had other photographers to help handle the work load. In the late 1990’s the local economy crashed and clients either went out of business or cut back drastically. After a period of struggle his Dallas studio closed . At that time David moved his family to Arizona where he received his teaching credentials, allowing him to do what I had originally planned to do, which was teach.
David Neely’s teaching career continues today, after 12 years teaching in Phoenix. David taught Photo Imaging at Metro Tech in central Phoenix. David writes, “The kids and the experience was wonderful and a time in my life I will never forget. After retiring in 2009 we moved to the Prescott area to be closer to our son and his wife, not to mention our new granddaughter. I still teach part time as an Adjunct Professor at Yavapai College in Prescott and I show my Fine Art Photography in the Jerome Artists Coop Gallery. I have been completely immersed in the photographic arts my entire adult life and that passion still burns strong! Photography is an amazing method to communicate your views, feelings and ideas to others and to show your passion for the world we live in. My work is what I call “Interpretive Photography” meaning that I try to show you and tell you what I see and feel”.
David’s show entitled “Earth, Sky, Doors and More” will enjoy an opening reception along with the 17 Anniversary Party of Arts Prescott Cooperative Galley on May 27, 2011. Arts Prescott is located at 134 S. Montezuma St on Historical Whiskey Row.
